5 Ways to Show Your Love

I often think about my grandmother, who spent nearly 60 years with the love of her life, and the last 10 years missing him. I find it unfathomable the pain she must feel not having his hand to hold while swinging on the porch watching the boats sail by or the joy she had when preparing his favorite homemade cobbler. While I’m sure there is not a single day that passes without his memory in her mind, I imagine Valentine’s Day brings some added weight to her sorrow.

My grandmother’s story is unfortunately not unique. Many seniors are widowed or living alone, and finding a special way to show them some extra love can make a big difference.

Here are some ways you can fill a senior’s day with extra love:

  • Share a beautiful flower arrangement: Have flowers delivered, or deliver them yourself if you live nearby.
  • Bake a delicious treat: A special treat is even sweeter when it’s shared. So, sit awhile and share something yummy. Don’t forget to get the kids involved too!
  • Take a walk down memory lane: Create a photo album or scrapbook dedicated to family milestones, including everything from weddings to childbirth, to significant birthdays and anniversaries. If your loved one is widowed, set aside some time to look through the album and reminisce together.
  • Host a brunch: Invite a family member, friend or neighbor who would otherwise be alone to brunch at your home.
  • Give the gift of companionship: Seek assistance from a personal attendant to engage with your loved one, friend or neighbor, if even for just a few hours per day, to companionship, conversation and comfort.
