Tips that you can do at home

While there is currently no cure for most forms of dementia, it doesn't mean we're powerless against them. Mounting research is showing that there may be ways to slow the progression and possibly change the pathologies of many common dementias, giving those afflicted with them and their families the possibility of more precious, fulfilling moments together.

Here are a few lifestyle habits that you can implement to maintain or improve your brain health as you age: 

Change things up!
Work out your memory by changing up your day-to-day routines. Take a new path during your morning stroll, brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand or read a new book. Switching up your routine helps to keep your mind active and stimulates your hippocampus, the part of the brain that is responsible for memory function.

Get your fitness on!
Physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, not only helps with your physical wellness but mental as well. Exercise just a few days a week for 30 minutes to keep your brain sharp. Take your dog for a walk or do some yoga. Researchers have found a correlation between aerobic exercise and increased volume of the hippocampus and improved memory in older adults. 

Eat healthy!
Studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet, which is lower in fat and higher in veggies and fruit, can keep both your heart and mind healthy! Stick to foods that are low in fat and cholesterol, such as fish, poultry, nuts and whole grains.
