Meet the mayor of Silverado

Marilyn Michelini is a resident at Silverado in Illinois, referred to by many at the community as "The Mayor of Silverado", and rightly so! Marilyn has led a decorated life, holding various public office positions and serving the community. She is most known for her career as the village president of Montgomery, a title she held for 12 years. Under her leadership, the community grew from a population of approximately 5,600 to over 18,400 before she handed over the reins to the current village president in 2013. Beyond her accomplishments as village president, Marilyn was also a founding member of the Montgomery Economic Development Corporation in 2004 and an active member of the Aurora Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. Marilyn's involvement in the community dates back to the 1950s, and even after retiring, she still continued to be involved in civic and women's rights groups.

In early 2018, tragedy struck when Marilyn suffered a severe stroke that left her unable to walk, talk or eat. "It was a rough time," Marilyn had stated. However, for Marilyn, the stroke was just another hurdle she was determined to overcome! In the following months, Marilyn slowly but surely made improvements in her health when she eventually moved into Silverado. It was no easy journey, but, with perseverance and the help of loved ones, Marilyn made a miraculous recovery by the end of the year! At Silverado, Marilyn continues to work on her memory, mobility and speech.

Beside Marilyn's room at Silverado is a memory box, which offers guests a peek into her accomplished life. The tall cabinet is filled with photos from her time in politics and community service, including a photo of her with former President Barack Obama and another with former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

Marilyn recently shared her story with the Chicago Tribune. To read the full story, click here.
