Silverado Featured in the Huffington Post

Outreach and education are huge parts of Silverado's commitment to enriching the lives of those living with memory impairments and their families. The Huffington Post recently highlighted just such an initiative, Silverado Sierra Vista Senior Community Ambassador Ed Blomendahl's efforts spearheading the city of Azusa, California's transformation into a Dementia Friendly Community

Silverado hopes to erase the stigma of memory-impairing diseases by helping promote a wider understanding of them. While the public may be generally aware of dementia, knowledge of how it affects both those living with it and those close to them are less understood. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the number of California residents with Alzheimer's disease will double by 2030, a figure that does not account for people affected by other types of dementia. Already, 1.1 million Californians care for a loved one with dementia today, and nearly 60% of people caring for a person with dementia rate the stress as high or very high due to the physical and emotional toll.

In late 2016 the City of Azusa, in partnership with Silverado Sierra Vista, signed a resolution to become a Dementia Friendly City - the first in Los Angeles County. Ed assembled a task force of community leaders to help make the vision of a Dementia Friendly Azusa reality.

Though only months old, the Dementia Friendly Azusa initiative has made many stand up and take notice. One such person is Huffington Post writer Deborah Swiss, who used her own experience with her mother's dementia to give an insider's view of just how important programs like this truly are.
