Working it Out
Silverado Beach Cities resident Bob Hively has been a lifelong fitness enthusiast — football, tennis, running and boxing being among his favorites. When Bob came to Silverado in 2016, he had a diagnosis of major depressive disorder and dementia, and had not been engaging in the physical activities he loved so.
Bob’s first weeks in the community were marked by agitation, so the community team set out to identify how the behaviors could be helped. They soon recognized that Bob’s behaviors stabilized when given more personal attention and tasks that gave him a sense of helping others.
The team began a new care plan, and almost instantly Bob’s behaviors improved. His agitation decreased and he became more social and engaged, particularly in his workouts with the Cardio Workout fitness group. Bob’s favorite two activities are jumping rope and spending time with Oreo, the community’s new dog, both of which involve physical exercise that is beneficial to brain health.
