Veterans Day with Silverado Hospice
Silverado Hospice Honors Veterans with Pinning Ceremony and Certificate Presentation
"On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free." - Dan Lipinski
On November 11, 2015, families and friends were invited to help celebrate their loved ones, our patients, with a special ceremony offered by Silverado Hospice. The Hospice Social Worker, Volunteer Coordinator, and a veteran volunteer took time to visit every veteran patient in their home and present each one with The Veteran Service Flag Pin as well as a framed certificate of appreciation and card signed by our entire hospice staff. It was a day filled with laughter, tears, storytelling, hugs, picture taking, appreciation and recognition of our veteran patients, their sacrifices and accomplishments, as well as remembrance of those we have lost.
The family of a former hospice patient attended our ceremony at Silverado Fort Worth, and after accepting their father’s pin and certificate, they shared a brief history of their late father with our staff:
“Johnny W. Martin entered the Army Air Corps (Force) November 7, 1942. He was a crew chief on C-46 plane and flew some of the most dangerous missions of WWII. He served in the CBI – China Burma India Theater – flying over the Himalayan Mountains which was known as 'flying The Hump'. He logged over 50 hours, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. While flying, his plane was shot at and disabled, so it went down. They hid in trenches for three nights until a rescue plane spotted them and returned them to home base. Daddy was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps after his return home.”
