Silverado Bee Cave Residents Volunteer for Veterans
Written by Silverado Director of Resident Engagement Marilyn Sibley
Every Tuesday is “health testing day” for Veterans at the Central Texas Veterans Outpatient Clinic here in the Austin area. Many of these veterans drive from long distances and have been fasting since midnight. After their tests, they are looking forward to a quick snack before the drive home.
On the fourth Tuesday of the month, our Silverado Bee Cave Nexus residents ride to the clinic, loaded with snacks they’ve prepared the day before. The group makes an effort to offer a variety of sweet, savory, sugar-free and gluten-free baked goods so that everyone can select what best suits their diets.
Our Silverado Hospice team has set up a table with the Silverado tablecloth, there’s hot coffee available and all of our home-baked goodies are out on display. The Veterans come by, have a bite to eat and chat. Many of our residents were either enlisted services members or “service spouses” so the conversations are meaningful and special to them.
Seeing as one of our Nexus Pillars is “social activities with a purpose”, our Nexus residents actively volunteer with the Veterans Clinic. Our residents love volunteering and giving back to such a special group of people!
