Silverado Valley Ranch at the 2016 Greater Dallas Walk To End Alzheimer's

Story by Mollie Pollard, Director of Resident Engagement, Silverado Valley Ranch

There are not enough words to express the wonderful time Silverado Valley Ranch had at the Alzheimer’s walk on Saturday, October 1, 2016!

The largest group we've had in four years walked the three mile course. There were caregivers, family members from the past and present, leadership, residents and our community dogs…our whole Silverado family walked together! Some of our caregivers made shirts in honor of the residents who had passed away over the last year with each resident name printed on the back.

To add to this wonderful story, another thing happened which touched everyone’s heart.

During the morning of the walk, Karin Rebuldela, a resident at Silverado Valley Ranch who has a one-of-a-kind personality, was up walking around in her robe with some coffee. Although she wasn't originally planning on coming with us to the walk, we saw the WANT in her eyes that morning. We asked her if she wanted to join us in the walk and she excitedly exclaimed, “I know that disease, I want to walk for it.” We helped her get changed and off we went!

We brought a wheelchair for each resident so they would not have to walk the three miles. Karin sat the first mile. When we reached the second mile, she looked back at Autumn, our caregiver who was pushing the wheelchair, and said, “I want to run!” We stopped and off Karin went, running as fast as she could! Some of the staff took off after her in an attempt to keep up. Karin kept saying, “Come on guys, you can do it!” We ran almost the all the remaining 2 miles, with smiles on our faces.

When Karin got to the finish line, she kissed every cheerleader on the cheek as she exclaimed, “Beautiful performance!” Her day was bright and she felt a sense of purpose. After the race we found out Karin used to run every day. She wasn’t even sore. We are still recovering.
