Dallas Morning News  IRVING — "Mary Hoffman holds the painting of a beachside sunset in her hands — a piece up for auction to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

'Oh, my goodness, it does look nice, doesn’t it? I’m proud of that,' Hoffman, who has dementia, said of her first painting. “It taught me a lesson: ‘Can’t’ never did anything.”

Hoffman, 92, and other residents at area Silverado memory care communities have been taking art classes and selected their own pieces to auction off Tuesday at the Silverado Valley Ranch community. About 50 pieces from 25 residents were up for grabs, with bids starting at $30.

The auction raised $1,429 for the Alzheimer’s Association chapter in Dallas with the highest bid of a piece of $100 before the auction resumed in the evening. The pieces ranged from abstract shapes and lines to realistic nature scenes and everything in between, including a dinosaur.

The art program is important for residents because it gives them a sense of purpose and accomplishment to give back to the community, senior administrator Andrea Fichtner said.

'The way we look at life within Silverado is, just because they have this disease doesn’t mean they’re any different than you or I,' Fichtner said. 'They can still paint; they may paint in a different way, for a different time period or different medium, but it doesn’t mean that they can’t do it and doesn’t mean they can’t still enjoy it.'”
