Hospice patients and families are asked to cope with changes related to health, body image and family dynamics, to name a few. Currently, the hospice community is preparing for change.

Hospice is facing unprecedented reimbursement and regulatory challenges. Programs are preparing for the impact of multiple Medicare rate cuts and are working to comply with new regulations that are not currently in line with the operational realities of patient care. At the same time, hospices are being proactive in their efforts to prevent fraud and abuse, and working to ensure that the patient quality at the end of life is measurable and reported to regulatory agencies.

In an effort to navigate these changes, a select group of Silverado associates - led by Hospice Vice President Michelle Pickering and Dallas Hospice Administrator Monica McCommons - recently were selected to help rally around legislation to help the hospice community. Silverado associates spent a full day on Capitol Hill for hospice. Their mission was to ask Congress to protect and support the hospice legislation.

The HELP Hospice Act would (1) require the Secretary to establish a payment reform demonstration program to test and evaluate any prospective payment revisions to hospice, (2) increase hospice survey frequency to every 3 years, and (3) amend the new face-to-face encounter requirement to reflect operational realities for hospice programs, and the needs of the patients and families they serve.

Silverado associates hopefully imparted to our Congressmen that, while we accept change, we also need to preserve access to hospice for future generations.
