Sandwiches for Students
Residents help prepare meals for a local high school's athletes
As a part of Alexandria's ongoing efforts to support local non-profits, businesses and the community, they have put in place a program referred to as Volunteer Alexandria. This program allows businesses and organization to contribute their services and resources to help other local businesses and organizations in need.
Our Alexandria community is one such business that has found a unique way to contribute. Our community sits right down the street from a high school where a majority of its students are eligible for free lunches. Our residents have been visiting the high school every week to prepare sandwiches and snacks for the high school's football and wrestling teams. In return, the student athletes showered our residents with appreciation and gratitude and our residents were delighted to know that these students wouldn't have to go to practice on an empty stomach! Purposeful social activities, such as volunteering, make up a pillar of Nexus® at Silverado, our evidence-based brain health program. Volunteering not only improves cognition in those living with memory impairment, but gives them that much needed sense of purpose as well.
