Retired Engineer and Resident Visits Space Shuttle
With help from Silverado Memory Care Community and the California Science Center, retired Space Shuttle worker and Silverado Calabasas resident Bob Wilmes and his three daughters visited the Endeavor exhibit, giving him a special glimpse into his past and making a connection to one of his greatest moments of pride.
From work on the B-1 and B-2 Bombers to the Apollo Space program and then the Space Shuttle, Wilmes’ lifelong career in aerospace is the ultimate representation of American ingenuity and innovation.
“Since dad has Alzheimer’s, our hope was that the visit would help jumpstart some of his memories, and I could tell when he was focusing on the shuttle that there was a glimmer of recognition there,” shares his daughter Joyce Wilmes Reitz. “It’s such an amazing life’s work for him and I feel really proud that I could be a part of it today.” She adds, “I feel like Silverado saved Dad’s life. I found the right place for him – it’s like a home. My dad lived with us for six years and I felt like no one could take care of him the way I could, but now I can finally relax.”
