Life-In Love: Pet Therapy

Photos taken by Mark Graham

At Silverado, pets are a part of the daily routine. From community pets and therapy animals to pets residents brought with them, the benefits for everyone are clearly visible. It may be the first interaction with a pet that helps bring a withdrawn, uncommunicative new resident out of their shell. It may be the sense of responsibility and companionship that gives a much-needed sense of purpose. It may even be the song of a community bird that lightens the spirit of a visiting family.

Pet therapy for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia has also proven to be a powerful tool for what is known as “sundowners,” the evening periods where patients become agitated or confused. Pets also provide a sense of responsibility for our residents, a reason to get up when it’s their turn to feed the animals or take the dog for a walk. It’s not only companionship; it’s a reminder that our residents are not the only ones that need to be taken care of. It’s important to our residents, it gives them a greater purpose in life.

At Silverado Memory Care Communities, on-site dogs and cats fulfill Silverado’s mission of helping make life better for its residents!
