With Alzheimer’s Soaring, Memory Care Innovator Silverado Nears Ventura County Opening

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.--As the number of Californians with Alzheimer’s disease increases, a new Ventura County memory care community has taken significant steps toward completion. Silverado Thousand Oaks has appointed its Administrator and opened an on-site Welcome Center for prospective residents and their families. Located at 980 Warwick Ave., Thousand Oaks, the community is scheduled to open by the fourth quarter of this year. It is the first Ventura County location for Silverado, known from its founding for memory care innovation.

Silverado Thousand Oaks will serve 82 residents with Alzheimer’s and other memory-impairing conditions. A key aspect in their daily care will be the Nexus at Silverado® early-stage brain health program. The company developed the specialized initiative based on studies showing purposeful programming may slow progression and improve quality of life for those in the early phase of a memory-impairing disease.

“Academic research has validated that people taking part in Nexus at Silverado demonstrated a 60% improvement in cognition compared to those who did not participate,” said Ronda Wilkin, who has been named Administrator for Silverado Thousand Oaks. A Certified Dementia Practitioner, she has 30 years of experience in health and human services, with a decade focused on seniors, and a passion for serving the memory impaired.

The Silverado Thousand Oaks Welcome Center provides details on the company’s many other memory care innovations. Based on Silverado’s research showing that natural light can reduce depression and related symptoms in the memory impaired, large windows and skylights will bring in abundant sunshine throughout the building. To promote balance and reduce fall risk, Silverado has developed flat lean rails to line hallway walls. They replace traditional senior living community handrails whose shape and gap can contribute to falling, particularly among people whose depth perception has been affected by dementia.

Integrating holistic techniques with proven medical science, Silverado brings residents and children together to the benefit of both generations as a central component of community life. In addition to partnering with schools and youth organizations, Silverado encourages staff to bring their youngsters to work with them. This practice, which is on hiatus until the threat of COVID-19 passes, helps shape what it calls the “living environment,” which connects the memory-impaired with the rhythms of daily life rather than isolating them.

“With nearly 22-percent more people in California likely to be living with Alzheimer’s by 2025, it’s vital to continue innovating ways to improve the lives of these individuals and their families,” said Loren Shook, Silverado’s founder, president and CEO. “From our start in 1996, Silverado has been committed to making the world better for all who are affected by memory impairment. We look forward to soon providing this standard of care in Ventura County.”

Currently, 690,000 Californians 65 and above live with Alzheimer’s disease, a figure projected to rise by 21.7 percent, to 840,000 by 2025, according to the Alzheimer’s Association
